Guided Walk: The Thames Path - Detailed Itinerary
Kemble/Thames Head To Cricklade: 12.5 miles/20km
Your first nights accommodation is in the lovely Gloucestershire town of Kemble before beginning the first days walking from the rivers source (Thames Head) the following day. The infant river flows from the fields towards the village edge of Ewan, the Saxon word for river source, where the source truly begins to resemble a river. The trail passes Neigh Bridge then onwards to the Cotswold Water Park, a delightful stretch meandering through unspoilt lakes and wildlife reserves. The river passes through the pretty village of Ashton Keynes, before reaching Cricklade and your nights accommodation. This historic Roman town is a great place for an overnight stay with fine architecture dating back to Norman times.
Cricklade To Lechlade: 11 miles/17.5km
The river flows through rolling pastureland to the pretty village of Castle Eaton before joining with the River Coln where the Thames increases it's flow. The trail follows paths and lanes before returning to the river, leading into your nights accommodation at Lechlade. This small, attractive Cotswold town offers a range of amenities including an enticing option to take a river cruise to complete a lovely day on the Thames Path..
Lechlade To Newbridge: 16.5 miles/26.5km
Leaving the market town of Lechlade, the Thames gently meanders through open countryside. Following the course of the river, you pass through the village of Radcot, featuring the oldest bridge on the Thames, dating from 1200, and still in it's original form. The route continues past a series of pillboxes (anti-invasion defences) built to prevent a German invasion during World War II. Pass Rushey Lock, then on to the Trout Inn, maybe for a spot of lunch with it's great menu and open fires. The path continues to hug the riverside past a nature reserve and on to your nights accommodation at lovely Newbridge with it's beautiful bridge that dates back to the 13th century. .
Newbridge To Oxford: 14 miles/22.5km
The excellent rural scenery continues today following the river to The Ferryman Inn. It may be possible to take the 1000 year old ferry service across the river to the east bank to follow the rivers course. Alternatively, we take a detour from the river meeting up at Pinkhill Lock. The trail passes through Swinford with it's lovely toll bridge, one of the last two remaining on the Thames. The path begins to feel busier and the buzz of the great city of Oxford replaces the peaceful surroundings that were the norm. Oxford is an exciting place to stay on the path with it's wonderful architecture and history based around the famous university. It's a great place to explore and offers excellent cuisine options. .
Oxford To Abingdon: 10 miles/16km
Leaving the remarkable city behind, the path runs along the west bank. The walk passes by two lovely locks, Iffley and Sandford, before meandering along the riverside with it's tranquil views to your nights accommodation at Abingdon.
